As I am sure most of you are aware, there is a wave of devastation washing over education generally at the moment, and philosophy education in particular: philosophers made redundant left, right and centre, whole philosophy programmes being closed down. I can well remember times when no self respecting university could be without a philosophy department! How can a successful philosophy department such as that at Middlesex University be suddenly faced with annihilation? How can an amazing philosophy programme such as the continuing education philosophy at Birkbeck College be under threat? Why is the country’s only Access to Philosophy programme, at Mary Ward, being closed down?
These developments are nothing less than an attack on thinking and critical reasoning per se!
If you are as angry and worried about the situation as I am, please come along to our Public Lecture event on Sun 6 June at 2pm at the Mary Ward Centre (42 Queen Square, London WC1), where Professor Paul Standish (Head of Philosophy at the Institute of Education) will talk about "Economies of Higher Education". This should give us a great opportunity to discuss all that's happening.
Hoping to see you there!
